Club と Society

大学写真部の英語表記で少し戸惑うことがあり・・・。 かつて滞在した英国の大学では、文化系の部活動を Society と呼んでいた記憶がある。が、日本の大学ではほとんどが Club と称している。たとえば U-tokyo Photography Club、Keio Camera Club など。でも、Waseda Photo Society のように Society を使っている例外もある。そこで、Club と Society の違いを調べてみた（といっても、"difference between Club and Society" でググってみただけですが^^）。

イギリスの場合。キングスカレッジ・ロンドンの分厚い学生生活ガイドブックのなかほど（p22）に、Club と Society の違いが記されている。

The difference between Clubs and Societies is that clubs are focused on sports and have a national governing body (eg the Football Association, the Rugby Football Union). Societies on the other hand encompass everything else so their activity potential is limitless!

Club は体育会系で（全国規模の）上部団体を持つもの、Societyはそれ以外のものすべて。

北米の場合。とあるカナダの大学のサイトに、

Clubs are linked by a common interest, such as a hobby, culture, or religion, whereas a society is linked to an academic department.

とある。Club は趣味文化宗教など共通の関心でつながるもの、Society はアカデミックな学部教育につながるもの。

要するに、英国流なら Society、北米流なら Club ということかな。。
